Finally! One of the most awaited plastic model kits has arrived at Otaku ME. The 1/144 scale HG Grendizer (Infinitism ver.) which was teased at our booth last MEFCC is finally here and here’s what we think about it.

If you grew up in the Middle East in the ’70s, there’s a chance that you sung along to the opening track of Grendizer dubbed in Arabic. Part of the Mazinger series of anime series, Grendizer was dubbed in Lebanon in the middle of the turmoil of the civil war during the ‘70s, it was a massive hit in the Arab world which completely reflect the continued admiration from the Arabic market.

Build Quality:

HG Grendizer comes in 1/144 scale though it towers over most of it's High-Grade Gundam cousins and is almost as tall as a Master Grade. Based on the Mazinger Z Infinity Version, it replicates most of its predecessor’s design idea while still able to stand out and add enough new stuff to even surpass its older brother.

g33 g5

In terms of construction, it’s a pretty straightforward build. The details of this kit are amazing including tiny ones like the different color shades of the horns and the separate spikes for the head and the Spazer’s propellers. Stickers are actually kept to a minimum and the plastic parts come with a glossy finish.

Articulation:

g6

The articulations on the Grendizer’s body is fairly decent throughout the model kit. The head features in a ball joint which allows for rotation with the neck part itself able to tilt on its own. The shoulders can go a full 360’ though due to design, the arms are limited to 90’ at the elbow joint. The wrists use a ball joint with a pivot which moves around nicely while the torso section features an ab crunch and can also swivel around a fair bit.

g6

The Lower Body furthermore carries forth the same levels of articulation. The hip section parts are able to be widely spread out and while you’re able to move up the thighs fairly high without obstructions, the knee can only bend a standard 90’. The ankles are ball jointed which provides good movement, enough to level out the feet and obtain a fairly nice balance.

In short, while the articulation isn’t quite the best, it's still great enough to pull off a number of dynamic action poses dramatically enhanced by the Grendizer’s sharp and chiseled design.

Accessories:

When it comes to accessories, the Grendizer does not disappoint. With its wide arsenal of weapons and abilities, Bandai really tried to incorporate all of it into this kit.

g10

One of the main difference between Grendizer and the Mazingers are the blades mounted on its wrists. Though it may look like these blades might hinder the kit’s arm movement, they can actually be folded to one side to allow the arm to fully bend from the elbow.

g11

In the anime, Grendizer fires its forearms as the blades mounted on the wrists flip forward, essentially making the attack a flying drill. This attack is called the Screw Crusher Punch. Now you can fully recreate that move as you can replace the hands with a Screw Crusher Puncher fist. This can also be fully separated from the arm to recreate it flying through the air by mounting it in a special stand.

g12 g13

The Grendizer’s main and arguably most iconic weapon is the Harken. These are two crescent moon blades mounted on its shoulders. The kit also has the option of holding two Single Harkens on both hands or join them together to form a Double Harken.

g14

This version of the Grendizer comes with the upgraded version of the Spazer, the Double Spazer. In the anime, it was built as a support unit for Grendizer which acts as a capable fighter or can combine with Grendizer to enable it to fly.

g15 g16

With the Double Spazer equipped, it turns the Gredizer into flight mode. This mode makes the kit capable of doing flying poses.

This kit also comes with its own action base composed of black and clear plastic. This allows the Grendizer to do dynamic poses along with either the inflight Screw Crusher Puncher or the Double Spazer.

The red crest on the kit’s chest gives the effect of the Anti-Gravity Storm which is the ability of Grendizer to emit a ray of energy from it.

Final thoughts:

For a plastic model kit with so much hype and anticipation, the Grendizer Infinity Ver., does not disappoint. With its highly detailed design and a wide arsenal of weapons and accessories, it fully recreates all of Grendizer’s signature looks and poses. While its articulation could be better it does provide enough mobility, especially in the arms and legs to create varied poses.

It is a perfect combination of the nostalgic Grendizer of old given a new and modern look that would surely appeal to those new to the series.

Overall we give it an 8 out of 10 stars.
