So you've got a pretty neat collection of kits, but you're starting to find the hobby starting to get a bit dull after a few dozen clean builds...
What else can you do, you might be asking yourself.. Believe us when we say that building your kits is just scratching the surface.
There are tons and tons of other things you can do. Here are just a couple of suggestions on getting the most fun out of a kit.
- Weathering and Detailing:
You may use:
- Pigments:
Here’s a quick look of a before and after outcome of the 1/35 Tamiya MM Soviet Main Battle Tank primed, painted and weathered!
- Paint:
Some kits may not come with a whole lot of colour application, especially some of the older ones, however that can easily be touched up with Paint or even Paint Markers for detailing. Try to get the kit to look as accurate to the Box Art reference as possible. ^_^
If you're tired of seeing the same generic colour schemes, you can always choose to spice the colours up a bit! Go for any colour you like, or even a colour combination
why not even try stripes and other patterns? :D
- Decals:
Apart from panel lines on your kit, Decals and stickers can be a further option to enhance detailing as they tend to make the kit more lively and stand out rather than leaving surfaces plain.
- Custom parts:
Another way to highlight features on your kit is to replace certain pieces. Mix and match up either plastic to metal components in certain areas for example.
- Kitbashing:
Kit bashing involves using parts from different models to change the overall look of either a base kit or make something new completely from scratch.
Here’s the 1/144 HGUC Advanced Hazel as our base kit.
We’ll be using these other parts from the 1/144 HGUC Gaplant TR-5 Hrairoo to add onto the model.
Normally these wouldn’t be connectable without some additional modifications, so we scratch built some pegs.
And here’s the outcome!
Why not even try out a combination of the lot? The great thing about the hobby of scale modeling is that your imagination is your only limit. So go wild and have fun with what you love!
